Practical Use of 3D/VR Technology in Canon's Design Process

The visualization capabilities of 3D and CG technology, originally introduced to improve the efficiency of development, has a wide practical use in the field of design. This lecture introduces recent examples of Canon design, where 3D and CG technology was used in the design process.

The virtual/augmented reality market value is estimated to become 80 to 100 billion USD in 2020. Severe competition toward haptic VR products is underway in order to enhance currently available audio-visual VR products, which in turn will lead to the development of telexistence products. The present status and future prospects of VR and telexistence will be discussed in special relation to robotics, AI, and network technologies.
